Define Volatility in Pokies & Slots

Before choosing the right pokie, it’s important to clearly define volatility. In simple terms, volatility shows how risky a slot is and what kind of payout pattern a player can expect. It explains whether a game will deliver frequent small wins or rare but large jackpots. For Australians, knowing what volatility means helps balance fun, bankroll, and session length, making it easier to pick pokies that suit personal playing style.

What Does Volatility Mean for Casual Players

When we define volatility in slots, we are talking about risk and the pattern of payouts. But what does volatility mean for casual Aussie players? It tells you how often a slot machine pays and the size of those wins. High volatility games may feel like a rollercoaster, with long losing streaks followed by a sudden massive win. On the other hand, low volatility slots provide frequent, smaller payouts that keep players engaged and entertained without burning through their bankroll quickly.

For casual players who want to stretch their budget, this balance is essential. Instead of risking AUD $200 in half an hour, they can spin for hours with the same amount on low volatility pokies Australia. This makes them attractive for anyone who values steady returns over chasing a one-time jackpot.

💡 Tip: Focus on session length and enjoyment rather than just maximum payouts if you’re new to online slots.

Volatility Formula in Practice

The volatility formula is based on two elements: win frequency and payout size. Developers run millions of simulated spins to determine how often payouts appear and how big they usually are. While players don’t see the exact calculations, they can interpret volatility by looking at features like:

  • Maximum win size (low volatility games rarely exceed x1,000 stake)
  • Paytable balance (lots of mid-tier payouts instead of extreme top-heavy rewards)
  • Bonus frequency (freespins and multipliers appearing often suggest lower volatility)
📊 Practical comparison:

Why Volatility Impacts Slot Sessions

Volatility changes how long your money lasts. In a high volatility game, 100 spins could leave you empty-handed or reward you with a huge jackpot. With low volatility, those 100 spins are likely to give back many small payouts, extending your play.

This matters for strategy: casual players with AUD $50–$100 can enjoy hours of spinning, testing scatter features, multipliers, freespins, and paylines without heavy risk. For most Australians who play pokies for entertainment, this slower pace is the smarter choice. Explore the key features that make low volatility pokies ideal for consistent payouts.

🎰 Quote: “Volatility is the heartbeat of every slot machine—it dictates whether you’ll experience a marathon of small wins or a sprint toward a massive jackpot.” – Casino Analyst, 2024

What Are Low Volatility Slots?

When players talk about low volatility slots, they mean pokies that deliver frequent, smaller payouts instead of chasing massive jackpots. These games are designed for stability, letting you enjoy longer sessions with less risk to your bankroll. For Australians, such pokies are perfect if the goal is steady entertainment, predictable wins, and a relaxed gaming experience rather than high-stakes thrill-seeking.

Typical Payout Frequency

Low volatility slots are engineered to deliver regular results. Expect small wins every 3–5 spins, making it easier to maintain a positive mindset. These frequent returns prevent the “dry spell frustration” common in high-risk pokies.

✅ Keeps players engaged

✅ Reduces frustration

❌ Sacrifices huge jackpots

Average Wager Size Needed

Because the risk is lower, low-limit slots allow comfortable betting even with small bankrolls. Wagering AUD $0.20–$1 per spin is enough to maintain balance. Unlike high-risk pokies that require deep pockets to survive swings, low volatility is budget-friendly.

💡 Tip: Always start with lower bets. If you notice steady returns, you can increase slightly to maximize entertainment without overspending.

Small Wins vs Big Wins

The biggest trade-off: you’ll enjoy many mini-payouts but won’t likely see a jackpot that changes your balance dramatically. Still, for players who prioritize entertainment and session length, this is an advantage rather than a downside. Weigh the Pros & Cons of playing low volatility slots before you spin.

Why Low Volatility Pokies Australia Are Popular

In Australia, pokies are more than just games—they’re a favorite way to relax and enjoy steady entertainment. Low volatility pokies Australia have become especially popular because they deliver frequent payouts, lower risks, and longer play sessions on a modest budget. For both beginners and experienced players, these slots provide the perfect balance between fun, bankroll control, and accessible stakes.

Safe Choice for Beginners

For newcomers, low volatility pokies Australia are perfect learning tools. They provide consistent feedback through regular wins, helping players understand reels, paylines, scatter symbols, wilds, and bonus mechanics. Frequent payouts boost confidence and reduce risk.

Perfect for Long Play Sessions

These pokies are a dream for entertainment seekers. With AUD $50, you could spin for two to three hours, thanks to steady returns. That’s why Australians who enjoy pokies socially often choose this category—they guarantee extended session length.

Aussie-Friendly Low Limit Pokies

Many international casinos offer low-limit slots with minimum wagers as low as AUD $0.10 per spin. This perfectly suits casual Aussie players looking to enjoy light entertainment without financial pressure.

🎰 Example: Popular titles like Starburst and Blood Suckers are classic low volatility slots, often chosen by beginners and budget players worldwide.

Low-Limit Slots and Betting Strategy

For many Australian players, low-limit slots are the smartest way to enjoy pokies without overspending. These games allow you to bet small amounts, stretch your bankroll, and still experience frequent wins. Pairing them with the right betting strategy—like choosing safe stakes, setting limits, and focusing on features such as free spins or multipliers—helps maximize both entertainment and control over session length. Discover the best pokies that deliver steady wins and relaxing gameplay.

Best Stakes for Low Volatility Games

The sweet spot is keeping bets between 1–2% of your bankroll per spin. If you deposit AUD $100, a good bet range is AUD $1–$2. This way, you can survive hundreds of spins without stressing over sudden losses.

Managing Bankroll Safely

Bankroll management is the difference between fun and frustration. Since low volatility slots provide consistent wins, it’s easier to divide funds into daily or hourly sessions. Set a profit threshold—for example, AUD $40 win—and consider cashing out instead of continuing indefinitely.

💡 Tip: Always have a stop-loss limit (e.g., AUD $30 down) to prevent overspending.

Slot Features to Look Out For

When choosing low volatility pokies, prioritize games with:

✅ 20+ paylines

✅ Frequent freespins rounds

✅ Reliable scatter activations

✅ Moderate multipliers for balanced rewards

These features increase payout frequency, ensuring smoother, longer play sessions.

Advantages of Playing Low Volatility Slots

Choosing low volatility slots comes with clear benefits for players who value consistency and control. These games provide frequent payouts, reduce the risk of rapid bankroll loss, and create a smoother, more enjoyable gaming experience. For Australians, they’re ideal for long sessions, relaxed gameplay, and building confidence without the pressure of chasing massive jackpots.

Steady Payouts

Players enjoy frequent payouts that provide reassurance and entertainment value. This stability allows newcomers to learn strategies without financial stress. Understand how payout frequency defines the rhythm of low volatility games.

Lower Risk Factor

Low volatility means lower stress and smaller bankroll swings. You’ll rarely lose big chunks of money in a short period.

Stress-Free Gaming

With calm pacing and regular wins, low volatility slots are perfect for players who view pokies as entertainment rather than a high-stakes challenge.

AdvantageImpact on Players
Steady PayoutsConsistent entertainment value
Lower RiskBankroll protection
Stress-FreeRelaxed gaming experience

Downsides of Low Volatility Slots

While low volatility slots are great for steady wins and longer play sessions, they do have certain drawbacks. The most noticeable is the limited jackpot potential—big wins are rare and usually capped at modest amounts. For some players, the predictable gameplay may also feel less exciting compared to high-volatility pokies that deliver adrenaline-filled swings.

Limited Jackpot Potential

The biggest drawback is capped rewards. Most low volatility slots have top wins around x500–x1,000, far smaller than high volatility titles promising x10,000+.

Lower Excitement Factor

The thrill factor is reduced because wins are predictable. If you crave suspenseful spins and rare giant payouts, this style may feel dull.

Not Ideal for Risk-Takers

High rollers or aggressive players often find low volatility slots underwhelming since they lack high-risk drama.

❌ Small jackpots

❌ Limited adrenaline

✅ Balanced fun for casual players

This guide breaks down the volatility definition, explains why it matters, and shows you how to choose slots that match your playing style.

Volatility Definition in Slot Games

Understanding volatility in slots is key to mastering online pokies. It shows how often a game pays out and the potential size of wins. High volatility slots deliver rare but large jackpots, while low volatility slots give frequent, smaller payouts. Knowing this helps players plan bankrolls and choose games that fit their risk style. Get a clear volatility definition to understand how it shapes your pokie experience.

How Experts Define Volatility in Gambling

Experts describe volatility, also called variance, as a measure of the risk and reward in a slot game. It shows how often a game pays out and how large those payouts can be.

  • High volatility slots: Rare payouts, but potential for massive jackpots.
  • Low volatility slots: Frequent, smaller wins that keep your bankrolls more stable.

To define volatility, think of it as the “beat” of a slot—how often the reels line up for a win and how extreme the swings in your balance might be.

What Does Volatility Mean in Slots for Beginners?

For beginners, understanding what does volatility mean in slots is essential to enjoy online pokies safely and effectively. Volatility shows how often a slot pays out and the potential size of those wins. Grasping this concept helps players plan their bankrolls, choose games that suit their style, and avoid unnecessary frustration during long losing streaks. Don’t fall for common misconceptions about slot volatility — here’s what you should really know.

🎯 Beginner’s Fact: 78% of new players who understand volatility report more enjoyable gaming sessions and better bankroll management compared to those who don’t!

Low volatility slots deliver frequent, smaller payouts, keeping your balance steady and allowing for longer sessions without depleting your bankrolls too quickly. On the other hand, high volatility slots offer rare but potentially huge jackpots, which can be exciting but require patience and larger bankrolls to withstand dry spells.

Easy Explanation of Volatility

In simple terms, what does volatility mean measures the “riskiness” of a slot:

  • Low volatility: Wins occur often, but amounts are generally smaller. This keeps your bankrolls stable and is perfect for beginners or casual players who want extended gameplay without big swings. Examples include popular Australian pokies like Starburst and Aloha! Cluster Pays, which provide constant action and frequent freespins.
  • High volatility: Wins are rare, but when they happen, they can be substantial. These slots often include large jackpots, bonus rounds, and multipliers that can significantly increase payouts. Games like Dead or Alive 2 or Bonanza Megaways offer huge rewards but can create long losing streaks, making them suitable for players with bigger bankrolls and higher risk tolerance.

💡 Tips for Beginners:

  • Start with low volatility slots Australia to understand mechanics before trying high-risk games.
  • Track your bankrolls and set session limits to avoid overspending.
  • Use in-game features like scatter symbols, freespins, and multipliers to maximize small wins.

Risk vs Reward Balance in Slots

Every slot game is a balance between risk and reward. Low volatility slots allow you to play longer with smaller bets, making them ideal for casual gaming and steady enjoyment. High volatility slots are designed for thrill-seekers willing to risk more for a chance at life-changing jackpots.

Some practical examples:

  • Low volatility: Frequent small wins of $1–$5 per spin, ideal for a $50–$100 bankroll over a long session.
  • High volatility: Rare wins of $100–$1,000+ per spin, requiring patience and a larger bankroll to sustain multiple losing spins.

✅ For Australian players, balancing risk is key. Many online casinos like Rocketplay provide both low and high volatility options, allowing players to mix styles in a single session. Always remember: online pokies are regulated offshore, and players must be 18+ to play responsibly.

Volatility Meaning vs RTP in Slots

Understanding the difference between volatility and RTP is essential for smart slot play. Volatility shows how often and how big wins occur, while RTP (Return to Player) indicates the overall percentage of wagers returned over time. Knowing both helps players manage bankrolls and choose slots that match their risk and reward preferences.

Difference Between Volatility and RTP

  • Volatility = risk level, win frequency, jackpot size
  • RTP (Return to Player) = percentage of wagers returned over time
MetricWhat It MeasuresImpact on Gameplay
VolatilityWin frequency & sizeShort-term experience
RTPOverall return percentageLong-term returns

Can RTP Change Volatility?

No. A high RTP slot can still be high or low volatility. Volatility determines the pattern of wins, while RTP shows overall theoretical returns.

📈 Mathematical Example: A 96% RTP slot with high volatility might pay nothing for 200 spins, then award a 500x win. The same RTP with low volatility could give steady 0.8x-1.2x wins every few spins!

Which Factor Matters More for Wins?

  • Short-term sessions → volatility matters more
  • Long-term play → RTP becomes more important

💡 Pro Tip: Always check both RTP and what does volatility mean before starting a slot. Look for combinations like high RTP (96%+) with your preferred volatility level for the best overall experience!

How to Choose Slots Based on Volatility

Choosing slots based on volatility helps players match games to their risk tolerance and playing style. Low volatility slots offer frequent small payouts, high volatility slots deliver rare but big jackpots, and medium volatility slots balance the two. Understanding these differences lets you manage bankrolls and enjoy more controlled, rewarding sessions.

Bankroll Strategies

• Low volatility slots → frequent payouts, lower risk, smaller bets

Volatility vs Return to Player (RTP): Key Differences

Understanding the difference between volatility and RTP is crucial for making informed decisions in pokies. While both metrics influence your potential outcomes, they measure different aspects of a game.

What Does RTP Mean Compared to Volatility?

RTP (Return to Player) represents the theoretical percentage of wagers returned over time. For example, a pokie with a 96% RTP will, on average, return $96 for every $100 wagered. Understand the key difference between volatility vs RTP and how both affect your slot outcomes.

Volatility, on the other hand, shows how frequent and large individual wins are:

  • Low volatility = frequent small wins
  • High volatility = rare large wins
  • Medium volatility = a mix of both

💡 Tip: Don’t confuse high RTP with low risk. A high RTP pokie can still be high volatility definition, meaning wins are rare but potentially massive.

Using RTP and Volatility Formula Together

Combining RTP with the volatility formula helps you understand both the probability of winning and the expected size of payouts.

✅ Example Approach:

  1. Check RTP to see average returns
  2. Apply volatility formula to estimate session risk
  3. Adjust bankrolls and wagers based on your strategy

This dual approach is particularly useful for game apps to win real money Australia, helping players optimize sessions for steady or high-risk gameplay.

Which Metric Matters More for Aussie Players?

Both metrics are important, but your priority depends on your playstyle:

  • Casual players: Focus on low volatility and moderate RTP for consistent small wins

Two recent antitrust filings in Europe reveal that private equity firm CVC Capital Partners is planning to purchase global gaming certification leader GLI.

Paysafe set to acquire PagoEfectivo

According to filings in Austria and Malta, Avalon Buyer Limited—a UK-listed company backed by CVC Capital Partners—intends to acquire Gaming Laboratories International, along with affiliates Worldwide Laboratories LLC and Kobetron LLC.

Austria’s Federal Competition Authority (BWB) published the notice on 3 July, setting a 31 July deadline for companies to submit comments. Malta’s Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority updated its own filing on 11 July, though its shorter comment period has already ended.

Avalon, formed in April 2024, lists directors Zachary Kelly and Matthew Turner. Kelly serves as CVC’s investment director, while Turner is head of strategic opportunities for North America.

Neither filing disclosed financial terms, but both confirm Avalon seeks full control over GLI’s testing, inspection, and certification operations in the gaming industry.

CVC has not commented on the potential acquisition. GLI also declined to provide a statement.

CVC Capital Partners preparing to acquire Gaming Laboratories International 1

An industry lynchpin

Founded in 1989 by James Maida and Paul Magno, GLI is headquartered in Lakewood, New Jersey. Over the years, it has grown into one of the most influential certification firms in gaming, with standards respected by regulators worldwide.

Today, the company operates 32 offices globally. Its work has been central to developing regulated markets across Australia, Macau, Brazil, and the UAE, among others.

Beyond traditional casino testing, GLI now covers sports betting, iGaming, cybersecurity, and consulting. It also runs the annual Regulators Roundtable, one of the industry’s most recognized training events.

Although its financials are private, GLI’s consistent growth and recent acquisitions suggest a valuation likely in the nine-figure range.

Asked about a sale last year, Maida told Fantini Research: “We never take anything off the table. But what matters most is shaping what GLI will look like in the decades to come.”

CVC long history with gaming

CVC, headquartered in Jersey, has a strong track record in gaming and sports betting. Its previous investments include William Hill, IG Index, Sky Bet, and Sisal, along with other holdings in sports and entertainment.

Though it scaled back its presence in gaming in recent years, CVC has remained active. In 2022, it formed a partnership with Belgian operator Gaming1, and in 2024, it divested Tipico’s US operations to LeoVegas. The GLI deal signals a renewed push into the sector.

CVC currently ranks as the sixth-largest private equity investor worldwide, according to Private Equity International.

Both leading testers acquired by PE

If completed, the GLI deal would mean that both of the gaming sector’s dominant testing companies are now owned by private equity. Earlier this year, BMM Testlabs was acquired by Visualize Group for an undisclosed sum.

That agreement excluded BMM’s responsible gaming training business but included its testing and cybersecurity services. A similar structure could emerge in CVC’s acquisition of GLI, though this remains unclear.

Notably, BMM founder Martin Storm retained a significant stake after the sale. Whether GLI’s founders Maida and Magno will do the same is yet to be determined.

Together, the two acquisitions highlight growing private equity interest in compliance and testing—fields that are becoming more vital as gaming expands worldwide.

“As new markets regulate across the globe, demand for safe, compliant gaming grows with them,” said Visualize managing partner CC Melvin Ike after the BMM deal.

New Zealand’s amended racing law has officially taken effect, making TAB NZ the sole operator for legal online sports and racing betting as offshore providers must withdraw.

TAB New Zealand

The government of New Zealand has enacted new legislation establishing TAB NZ as the exclusive online betting service for sports and racing.

The bill received Royal Assent and came into force on 28 June, introducing measures many MPs believe could significantly strengthen the national wagering sector.

Amendments to the Racing Industry Act 2020 were approved last week with backing from all six parliamentary parties.

TAB NZ monopoly strengthened as igaming liberalisation nears

The changes make it unlawful for foreign operators to accept bets, while also expanding tools to address gambling harm. According to H2 Gambling Capital, only 10% of online betting revenue is currently generated within New Zealand.

TAB NZ’s monopoly on sports betting will operate alongside a restricted but liberalised online casino market expected to launch in 2026. Operators including SkyCity, TAB NZ, Christchurch Casino, Grand Casino Dunedin, 888, Bet365, SpinBet, Spin City, Class 4 societies and Super Group have already shown interest in joining once the market opens.

Racing Minister Winston Peters stated the reforms will enhance the sustainability of the industry, which contributes NZ$1.9bn annually and employs 13,500 workers.

‘If an overseas company is offering you bets, they are breaking the law’

The Department of Internal Affairs regulates gambling in New Zealand, and its gambling director Vicki Scott outlined how players should respond to illegal providers.

“We advise New Zealanders to avoid placing bets with any brands other than TAB and Betcha,” Scott said. “If an offshore operator offers you bets, they are acting unlawfully.

“Players should be cautious of these operators, who may be licensed in places with weak consumer protections. They could fail to address gambling harm or even refuse to return balances and winnings.”

Racing legislation delayed by committees

TAB already controls 90% of New Zealand’s racing wagering. The new law now secures its monopoly across both land-based and online channels.

The legislation was first tabled in December but encountered delays in parliamentary committees before final approval.

Peters added the reform will shield TAB from the black market and support growth in the racing sector.

“Sport and racing hold an important role in communities across New Zealand,” he said. “With online betting growing fast, these measures protect TAB NZ’s revenue, ensuring industry progress.

“TAB remains the core funding engine for the racing sector and contributes to many sports codes. This law ensures local betting money stays in New Zealand rather than leaving for offshore companies.”

Hundreds of millions lost to black market racing operators in New Zealand

During debate last week, Green MP Steve Abel said around $185m in online racing stakes is lost offshore annually.

“This law will help retain more of those funds in New Zealand,” Abel said.

National Party’s Tim Costley urged officials to consider future betting products such as virtual and fantasy sports.

“We’ve got students here from Kaingaroa School today in the gallery. I’m sure they’ll find this interesting. It’s worth considering for future amendments. For now, I support the bill,” he added.

Green MP Celia Wade-Brown criticised the committee delays, calling it “regrettable” that the bill lacked urgency.

What does New Zealand’s racing bill amendment entail?

The updated law gives new ministerial powers, requiring TAB NZ to provide more transparency on its operations.

Harm minimisation rules already applied in retail will now extend to online, helping TAB identify and act when customers show signs of problem gambling.

“The intent is to ensure TAB NZ cannot restrict lawful customers without a valid reason, such as identified gambling harm,” the government explained.

The Department of Internal Affairs will temporarily oversee TAB’s online monopoly until a permanent regulator is set up for the future open iGaming market.

New Zealand is currently drafting laws for the liberalised iGaming framework, set for 2026, which will issue up to 15 commercial licences.

Entain to inject NZ$100 million into New Zealand

TAB’s partner Entain has pledged to invest NZ$100m into the racing sector following the law changes, reflecting its long-term commitment to the market.

TAB NZ CEO Nick Roberts praised MPs for approving the updated Racing Industry Act, writing on LinkedIn: “[The] Kiwis are better for it.”

Entain signed a 25-year partnership with TAB NZ in March 2023, covering wagering, broadcasting, and funding.

Entain’s MD for Australia and New Zealand Sam Moncur added: “We’re proud to help secure the future of New Zealand’s racing industry, while ensuring Kiwi sports continue to thrive.”

A meeting with Dubai’s deputy ruler could hint MGM Resorts is refocusing on launching an integrated resort in the UAE’s biggest city.

United Arab Emirates

MGM Resorts once looked fully invested in Abu Dhabi, with CEO Bill Hornbuckle saying a proposal had been filed last September to build there. But his Q1 earnings call remarks now suggest Dubai—where MGM is already building a nongaming resort—may be in play.

Hornbuckle, MGM chair Paul Salem and IAG’s Barry Diller – MGM’s largest shareholder – recently sat down with Maktoum Bin Mohammed, Dubai’s deputy ruler, deputy PM and finance minister.

Showing the potential of gaming in Dubai

Truist analyst Barry Jonas flagged the visit on the earnings call. Hornbuckle said the aim was to brief the prince on the Dubai project. MGM has worked with Wasl Hospitality since 2017 on a 2M sq ft Jumeirah Beach build, with 1,400+ rooms under MGM, Bellagio and Aria. Gaming isn’t included.

“The mission was to meet the prince, show the opportunity we see,” Hornbuckle said. “Not only in terms of a full resort… but the kind of gaming Dubai and UAE could host, and the unique elements we’d bring.”

He added: “It was a great conversation. It’s completely in their hands.”

Though UAE has a federal regulator – the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA) – Hornbuckle compared it to the US, where local jurisdictions decide.

Dubai casino plans not yet clear

Dubai is the UAE’s most populous emirate, but it hasn’t confirmed if gaming will be allowed.

“They haven’t said yes, they haven’t said no,” Hornbuckle noted. “We’re building an environment that could support it. Completion is expected Q3 2027.”

Construction on MGM’s Jumeirah Beach resort began in 2024, with PropSearch.ae now listing Q3 2028 as delivery.

“It’s an exciting project, a unique resort with many features,” Hornbuckle added. “Hopefully, we’ll add gaming.”

‘It’s completely in their hands’ Is MGM returning to eyeing Dubai for UAE resort 1

MGM: From Abu Dhabi to Dubai?

Wynn is already developing the UAE’s first integrated resort in Ras Al-Khaimah, opening in 2027. Speculation continues over which operators may follow.

MGM has shown strong interest, though its comments earlier leaned to Abu Dhabi. At ICE 2024, Hornbuckle suggested Abu Dhabi “might go first,” with the GCGRA based there.

But regulator chair Jim Murren – also chair of Resorts World Las Vegas – hinted expansion beyond Wynn’s project wouldn’t be rushed. At Skift Global Forum East last November, he said licensing was proceeding “deliberately.”

He added that more licensees would arrive in “five to 10 years,” but Wynn “clearly has the lead.”

IGT latest supplier to secure UAE gaming licence

So far, only Wynn and The UAE Lottery – run by The Game LLC – have received operator licences. Supplier licensing has been faster, with seven vendors approved. IGT joined Novomatic, Aristocrat and EQL Games this week.

GCGRA ramps up international collaboration with NJDGE MoU

GCGRA also signed an MoU with New Jersey’s Division of Gaming Enforcement, covering cybersecurity, consumer protection and responsible gaming tech.

“DGE is pleased to partner with GCGRA to share expertise in innovation, cybersecurity and responsible play,” said DGE interim director MaryJo Flaherty.

“Commercial gaming is central to our growth vision, boosting tourism and foreign investment,” GCGRA CEO Kevin Mullally added.

“This partnership aligns modern regulation with advanced tech, unlocking growth while protecting players.”

NJ governor Phil Murphy praised the deal, saying both regulators aim to strengthen consumer safety and create new economic opportunities.

MGM shares rose 2.54% to $31.62 in New York trading Friday morning.

Super Group is considering adding crypto payments in Africa to cut expensive banking fees and bring in fresh players.

Super Group is evaluating a move to roll out crypto payments across its main African territories to address high banking expenses.

“We are currently implementing and pursuing new prospects in the crypto sector,” CEO Neal Menashe told analysts during the company’s Q2 earnings call on Thursday.

“These steps aim to secure long-term growth as alternative payments and digital assets become more embedded in regulated gaming markets.”

The Betway parent emphasized Africa’s central role in its global vision. In Q2, the region alongside the Middle East contributed close to 40% of the group’s overall revenue, which jumped 38.8% year-on-year to $229 million.

Menashe underlined the value of tech spending across the continent to sustain this strong expansion. As part of the strategy, he revealed that the firm intends to bring crypto options to more African regions to help offset banking costs.

Super Group explores crypto to reduce costs in key African markets 1

How is crypto driving Super Group’s growth in Africa?

Businesses across Africa typically face higher payment processing fees compared to other regions. Long settlement delays also add to the burden.

“In Africa, we face major banking hurdles,” Menashe explained. “I believe crypto and coins can change things significantly because banking remains a very high expense in Africa—especially with onboarding clients and handling transactions. With crypto, we also attract another type of customer.”

He also mentioned that regulation in several nations supports this strategy. According to Menashe, crypto adoption could help the brand reach a fresh segment of users.

“It’s another category of player, similar to how casinos have various types of audiences. Crypto users are different, and that gives us an advantage. That’s exactly what we are focused on,” he added.

“That’s part of our long-term vision, aligned with our overall strategy. Particularly in transaction processing, we have some innovative plans that can directly enhance profits.”

Super Group said its technology efforts, crypto rollout and Jackpot City expansion will help secure future success in Africa.

The company anticipates digital assets and alternative payments will become more integrated into licensed gaming frameworks.

While growing its African footprint, Super Group also revealed its plans to leave the US market because of profitability challenges. North America, including Canada, delivered a record $199 million in Q2 revenue. The US exit is expected to cost around $30–$40 million, though no date has been given.

Menashe confirmed the group is seeking a buyer for its American player database.

Super Group raises outlook after strong Q2 results

Super Group’s revenue climbed 30% year-on-year to $579.4 million in Q2.

In its earnings report on Thursday, the company credited growth in Africa, Europe and North America for hitting record quarterly revenue.

That performance, however, was partly offset by declines in LatAm, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions.

Monthly active players rose 21% to 5.5 million, up from 4.5 million in Q2 2024. This marks the fifth straight quarter of growth in active users.

Profit before tax came in at $38.8 million.

Testing and certification leader BMM Testlabs has been purchased by The Visualize Group, a private equity firm based in New York, both parties announced on 15 April.

Details of the financial terms were not shared in the release. BMM operates three branches: its core testing arm, a cybersecurity unit and an RG training service. Only RG24seven Virtual Training is excluded from the deal, the company told iGB.

BMM president and CEO Martin Storm will continue to lead through the transition. He will also “retain a large ownership stake” in the company, while Visualize stated it is “excited to partner with Storm and the talented BMM team,” according to the statement.

The acquisition marks a strategic bet on the expanding regulated gambling market. Regulators often rely on external labs to assess and approve gaming technology. Founded in 1981, BMM runs 16 global offices and holds more than 700 licences. It is recognised as a top competitor in testing, alongside Gaming Laboratories International.

“Our team has closely tracked the fast global growth of regulated gaming and expect this to continue,” said CC Melvin Ike, managing partner of Visualize. “As new jurisdictions open worldwide, demand for safe, compliant gaming increases. With its reach, expertise and reputation, BMM is ideally placed to capture these opportunities.”

Storm added it is “an honour to take part in this journey and see our goals being realised.”

BMM Testlabs acquired by private equity firm Visualize Group 1

Gaming increasingly attractive to private equity

Private equity activity in gaming has gained pace since early 2024, expanding from suppliers and operators into the testing sector.

In July last year, Apollo Global Management acquired both IGT and Everi Holdings for $6.3 billion (£4.76 billion/€5.5 billion). Earlier, Brightstar Capital privatised supplier AGS for $1.1 billion. That same July, Bally’s Corp was purchased by Standard General for $4.6 billion.

Valuations across gaming firms have remained low, with most stocks well under their 52-week and peak levels. US tariff-related volatility added more pressure. As a result, private equity has seized chances where industry operators lacked resources.

“The issue is, other [gaming] firms can’t exploit [these valuations] like private equity does,” said Rick Arpin, US gaming head at KPMG, to iGB. “They lack capital reserves. They’d need to borrow, and borrowing is costly. Their equity isn’t strong either. This opened the door for private equity to be key acquirers.”

Visualize to implement “broad-based employee ownership”

Gaming’s strict regulations often create barriers for mergers and acquisitions. However, with BMM’s broad licensing and Storm’s leadership, Visualize will likely face fewer challenges. The firm also intends to invest in its workforce.

“As part of this deal, Visualize will introduce a broad employee ownership scheme, giving BMM staff a chance to join in the value creation plan for BMM. This includes multiple organic and acquisition-driven growth strategies already mapped out,” the announcement noted.

BMM currently employs more than 600 people, though it remains unclear how many belong to the RG24seven unit excluded from the sale.

The PointsBet board considers Betr’s offer to be stronger than MIXI’s bid.

PointsBet Betr MIXI

Betr Entertainment has taken the lead in the takeover contest for PointsBet, after the company labeled the wagering operator’s offer as “superior.”

On Monday, PointsBet released a statement confirming the decision, supported by advice from external consultants. The business has now suggested a joint due diligence process with Betr.

This due diligence, PointsBet added, will be rolled out in phases, starting with assessing the value of synergies and Betr’s scrip. In Australia, a scrip is a takeover method where shares are exchanged partly or fully instead of cash. The document informs shareholders of the number of shares they will be entitled to receive.

Betr submitted its AU$360 million (US$231 million) bid in February, before completing its rebrand from BlueBet. The proposal included a cash pool between $240 million and $260 million, plus $100 million to $120 million in scrip. Additionally, Betr highlighted potential annual synergies of at least $40 million.

PointsBet said its shareholders do not need to take any action yet and that further announcements would follow.

Betr edges ahead in PointsBet takeover race as proposal declared ‘superio’ 1

Where does the PointsBet declaration leave MIXI?

Although Betr may now hold the advantage, PointsBet’s stance on the rival MIXI Australia bid is unchanged. An independent expert is still evaluating the MIXI offer, submitted in February.

At that time, PointsBet approved MIXI Australia’s initial scheme, which proposed transferring all of PointsBet’s shares to MIXI Inc.’s Australian division, a Japanese sports and entertainment firm.

Under this plan, shareholders would receive $1.06 in cash per share, representing a 27.7% premium on PointsBet’s 25 February closing price, the day before the bid was made. This valued the deal at around $353 million.

Despite calling Betr’s bid “superior,” PointsBet still recommends shareholders vote in favor of MIXI’s scheme.

“The PointsBet board remains committed to, and unanimously recommends, that PointsBet shareholders vote in favour of the MIXI scheme, in the absence of a superior proposal [from Betr] and provided the independent expert continues to find the MIXI scheme in the best interests of PointsBet shareholders,” the company stated.

Based on a December balance sheet, MIXI had cash and deposits totaling over JP¥100 billion (approximately AUD1 billion).

What could a Betr deal mean for PointsBet?

If PointsBet moves forward with Betr’s proposal, it could result in parts of the company being separated.

Sources close to the talks have suggested Betr may sell PointsBet’s Canada-facing business, enabling it to concentrate on the operator’s main Australian market.

In April, Betr admitted it had received a non-binding proposal from Hard Rock Digital to acquire PointsBet Canada. Recent reports also indicated that Hard Rock Digital has applied for an Ontario online gambling license, likely in preparation for the acquisition.

Naturally, any potential sale of PointsBet Canada would depend on Betr completing its full takeover of PointsBet. Still, the latest reports, combined with PointsBet’s statement of a “superior” proposal, suggest that Betr now holds the momentum.

The Japan Casino Regulatory Commission is now expected to restart bidding for two remaining integrated resort licences later this year.

The Japan integrated resort sector is stirring back to life.

According to reports from local outlets, the Japan Casino Regulatory Commission, which only awarded one of three IR licences in 2023, plans to reopen the application round in the coming year.

Japan first legalized casino resorts in 2018. At the outset, optimistic analysts forecast the market could generate gross gaming revenue as high as $40 billion annually.

However, the Covid-19 crisis forced many investors into retreat, and enthusiasm for Japan’s market slowed. The lengthy bidding structure and demanding oversight system only added to the difficulties.

In 2023, just one of three available licences went to MGM Resorts and its Japanese partner, Orix Corp. Their $8.9 billion MGM Osaka project began construction on Yumeshima Island last month and is expected to debut in 2030.

Getting back to business

Momentum for a new bidding round grew in December, when the Diet approved new appointments to the gaming commission.

Former prosecutor Takafumi Sato, a key figure in shaping Japan’s IR rules, was chosen as chairman. Junichi Kakimizu, once head of the National Tax College, also joined. Psychiatrist Michiko Watari was reappointed. They joined existing members Hirofumi Kitamura, a former law enforcement officer, and economics professor Keiko Ishikawa.

Are casino groups still eager for Japan? In 2020, Las Vegas Sands withdrew, saying the returns did not justify the required outlay. In 2021, Wynn Resorts and Melco exited Yokohama bidding when an anti-casino mayor took office.

The Hokkaido Shimbun reports that a government survey found “several prefectures, including Hokkaido … are ‘interested’.” Previously, Hard Rock International focused on Hokkaido, along with Mohegan Gaming and Rush Street.

Yet Tokyo remains the biggest prize. Home to 37 million people, the capital hosted nearly 20 million international tourists and over 540 million domestic trips in 2023.

Japan reportedly to resume IR licence bidding 1

Osaka IR is the barometer

Steve Gallaway, managing partner at Global Market Advisors, says future investor enthusiasm depends on MGM Osaka’s performance. If successful, “there will be a push for more expansion.”

Gaming analyst Howard Jay Klein, writing for Seeking Alpha, urged newcomers to learn from Osaka’s model.

He called MGM Osaka the “first genuine mega ‘city within a city’ resort, setting a benchmark for large-scale brick-and-mortar venues in the age of digital betting.”

The huge development will feature three hotels with 2,500 rooms “covering three customer categories.” It will also offer 68,000 square metres of event space, a mall, spa, 3,000-seat theater, and 14+ restaurants.

The casino itself is only 3% of the total footprint, but still spans 69,700 square metres, with 6,400 slots and 470 tables.

MGM executive: Everybody wins

Speaking at G2E Asia in Macau on Wednesday, MGM’s President of Global Development Ed Bowers said the project will deliver major benefits for the prefecture, providing $1.1 billion yearly to Osaka’s economy via taxes and fees. “Moreover,” he noted, “it should produce nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars for Japan’s federal government.”

If new bidding is opened, MGM will keep its “first mover advantage” for at least five years post-launch, extending to 2035, Klein said.

“Osaka’s early position will be worth its weight in gold.”
